Start Port/Location:

End Port/Location:

Start Date: 1979-09-13

End Date: 1979-09-25

Equipment Used: Van Veen grab sampler, Echosounder, Plane table-transit-radios triangulation

Information to be Derived: Grain size analysis; Sea floor map; Bathymetric maps;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Successful job. Sediment samples: 33; Echo sounder profiles: 15 km; SCUBA dives: 12.

Staff: James V. A. Trumbull, Kurt Grove

Affiliate Staff:
Puerto Rico DNR: Ada Aviles - shore navigation
Nelson Espinell - shore navigation
Elizabeth Hyman - shore navigation
Abram Machado - shore navigation
Jose Muniz - at sea; UPR: Dr. Jack Morelock; Mrs. Barbara Morelock - shore navigation

Notes: Very successful and exciting. However, we had extreme difficulty getting enough people together to get to sea. SCUBA diving takes 3 people in the boat (two must go down and one must stay in the boat as a matter of safety). At the same time, a minimum of two people is needed for navigation control ashore, and not all people are capable of that work. Five good people is minimum, and we were hard put to find a fifth capable of the work, as is suggested by the list of participants. This lost us some good scientific data because it delayed our work until quite a few days after the event, the results of which we were investigating.
