Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: DSDP Leg 80 investigated the structural evolution and depositional history of the Goban Spur and adjacent Porcupine Abyssal Plain. Structural relationships and fossil assemblages indicate the rifting of the Armorican margin created submarine relief of as much as 2,000 m. Sea-floor spreading began no later than early Aptian, accompanied by rapid crustal subsidence, and regional downwarping and tilting. Subsidence was greatest near ocean/continent juncture, diminishing near the thicker continental crust. Subsidence has been minimal since Eocene, influenced by oceanic circulation and water chemistry.
