Other ID: AST 83-04

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): John C. Hathaway

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology, Seismics: Boomer, Sonar: Sidescan

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Survey examples of bottom morphology off Cape May, New Jersey and, using a small vibracorer and Van Veen grab, sample these for possible heavy mineral accumulations in order to determine possible correlations of such accumulations with morphology and shallow stratigraphy.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 1983-06-21

End Date: 1983-07-02

Equipment Used: Boomer, Sidescan sonar, Alpine Vibracorer, Van Veen grab sampler, Northstar 6000 LORAN-C, Single channel hydrophone

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Tested vibracorer rig; determined maximum depth limit was about 70 feet. Sidescan sonar was tested and produced records of doubtful usefulness. On subsequent days we alternated Uniboom surveys with days of sampling. Navigation for the cruise was by LORAN-C which was recorded on cassette tapes. Tape #1 malfunctioned at an point, so some of the navigation data is probably absent. The paper printout was retained so the data is retrievable. All Uniboom data was recorded on analog magnetic tape as well as on paper. Andrew Grosz returned to Reston, VA via truck carrying the cores and samples obtained with him. Uniboom lines: 13 (174 km); Sidescan sonar lines: 1 (20 km); Stations: 37; Vibracores: 16; Van Veen grab samples: 35.
