Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Biological Field Study: Experiments (biological), Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology, Seismics: Boomer, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Identify heavy mineral deposits and shallow gas on the insular shelf of northeastern Dominican Republic.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

End Port/Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Start Date: 1983-08-21

End Date: 1983-09-07

Equipment Used: Piston corer, 3.5 kHz, EG&G 234, Shipek grab, Alpine Vibracorer, Motorola Mini-Ranger III, Single channel hydrophone

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Seismic data indicated the presence of shallow gas near the western end of Bahia de Samana. Dominican geologists later told us gas had been discovered onshore near the area surveyed. Mud diapirs are a common feature in the sediments underlying the western port of Samana Bay. The bay is bounded in the north and south by faults extending parallel to the coasts.
