Other ID: 140

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Bradford Butman

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Environmental Data: CTD, Imagery: Photo, Sampling: Geology, Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography)

Scientific Purpose/Goals: 1. Recover 5 subsurface moorings deployed on the continental slope and upper rise (#271 at Station SS; #267 at Station SB; #268 at Station SC; #269 at Station SD; and #270 at Station SE). 2. Deploy 3 subsurface current moorings (#276 at Station SA; #274 at Station SE; and #275 at Station SF). 3. Deploy 1 bottom tripod (#273 at Station T). 4. Deploy 4 surface marker buoys (2 ea. at stations SF and T). 5. Conduct a detailed hydrographic survey along the edge of the continental shelf from Lydonia Canyon to Atlantis Canyon. 6. Obtain surface grab samples and hydrostatically damped cores.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 1983-10-17

End Date: 1983-10-24

Equipment Used: Slow corer, Van Veen grab sampler, Camera- deep sea, CTD 19+ with OBS, PAR, DO, Chl, Bottom platform

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: All work planned was completed. Considerable time was spent dragging for subsurface moorings as marginal batteries caused release failures. All current meters were recovered at SA, SB, SD, and SE. Near bottom sediment traps and releases at SD and SE were lost when the mooring was cut by grappling. There may be as many as 3 current meters plus sediment traps remaining at SC. All but 1 VACM functioned properly. Moorings deployed: 4 (#273, 274, 275, and 276 all recovered FA 84004 OCEANUS 149 Mar. 12-19,1984). Moorings recovered: 5 (#267, 268, 269, 270, and 271 all deployed FA 82037 OCEANUS 130 Nov. 9-16, 1982). Deployed surface buoys: 4 (A, J, L, and X); CTDs: 32; XBs: 31; Surface salinity samples: 63; Deep salinity samples: 6; Surface nutrient samples: 38; Deep nutrient samples: 10; Suspended sediment samples: 8; Oxygen samples: 9; Van Veen bottom samples: 7; Hydraulically damped cores: 2.

Notes: Considerable time was spent dragging for 3 of the subsurface moorings which would not release on command. All releases which failed were powered by batteries manufactured in June 1982. One release which was recovered was also powered by batteries manufactured in June 1982; upon recovery the battery voltage was extremely low (10 volts, normal is 17 v.). We concluded that the June batteries were marginal. Other releases which were recovered were powered with batteries manufactured in February 1982.
