Field Activity Details for field activity 1984-005-FA

Other ID: UCONN 84-1

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Stephen Colman

Affiliate Investigator(s): Ralph S. Lewis - CT Geological and Natural History Survey

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Seismics: Boomer, Seismics: Air Gun / Water Gun, Seismics: Bubble Gun, Seismics: Sparker, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sonar: Sidescan, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: (1) Define geology and shallow structure of western Long Island Sound; (2) determine geologic framework and Quaternary development of study area; (3) identify and map potential geologic hazards; and (4) simultaneously use and compare two types of hydrophone/amplifier/graphic recorder systems to determine which system is most suitable for this type of survey.

Start Port/Location: New Haven, CT

End Port/Location: New Haven, CT

Start Date: 1984-05-16

End Date: 1984-05-25

Equipment Used: EG&G 234, Innerspace Technology 25-element hydrophone, Edo Western Sidescan and 2.5 kHz sub-bottom system, Loran-C

Information to be Derived: Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Calm seas and few emergency course alterations allowed for consistent, well documented high-res seismic reflection data. In addition, the excellent resolution and penetration of the Innerspace hydrophone system, except in areas where gas deposits obscured the acoustic signal, produced clear, well-defined records from which the geology of western Long Island Sound can be ascertained. Original cruise plans called for the implementation of EDO Western sidescan sonar system to obtain sea-floor imagery. Unfortunately, the system malfunctioned the first sea day and was discontinued. Uniboom: 634 km.
