Status: Completed
Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
Funding Program(s):
Principal Investigator(s): Robert N. Oldale
Affiliate Investigator(s):
Information Specialist(s):
Data Type(s): Seismics: Boomer, Seismics: Air Gun / Water Gun, Seismics: Bubble Gun, Seismics: Sparker, Location-Elevation: Navigation
Scientific Purpose/Goals: Collect high-resolution seismic reflection data to define the geology and shallow structure of the inner shelf off the central Maine coast.
Vehicle(s):
Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA
End Port/Location:
Start Date: 1984-10-01
End Date: 1984-10-14
Equipment Used: ORE GeoPulse, Innerspace Technology 25-element hydrophone, Loran-C
Information to be Derived:
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: All equipment performed smoothly and satisfactorily. Technically, the cruise was successful. Bad weather delayed departure from Woods Hole five days. Geologically, the inner shelf off the central Maine coast consists mostly of bedrock outcrops and sediment ponds containing fine grained upper Wisconsinan glaciomarine deposits capped by Holocene marine deposits. At first glance, there is little information in the data on late-glacial ice-front positions or on the Holocene low sea-level stand.
Staff: Robert N. Oldale, Stephen Colman, Ronald C. Circe, Kenneth F. Parolski
Affiliate Staff:
Notes: Data will contribute to understanding the glacial and post-glacial evolution of the coastal region and will provide basic data for management and planning decisions concerning the inner shelf including those related to waste disposal, pollution control, dredging, and sand and gravel resources. Original Center People field contained: Bob Oldale, Chief Scientist; Ken Parolski, Technician; Ron Circe, Geologist; Steve Colman, Geologist.
