Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Rafael W. Rodriguez

Affiliate Investigator(s): Richard Webb - DNR

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Locate and vibracore potential sand deposits to be used as borrow sites for beach nourishment projects in the Metropolitan area.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location:

End Port/Location:

Start Date: 1985-05-08

End Date: 1985-05-09

Equipment Used: Alpine Vibracorer

Information to be Derived: Grain size analysis;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Approximately 200,000 cubic meters of sand will be needed for beach fill to offer immediate protection and recreational areas in the study area. The coarse moderately sorted sand retrieved in the cores appears to be suitable for use as beach fill. Two small deposits (possibly 50,000 cu. meters each) were investigated north of Punta Boqueron. One medium sized deposit (possibly greater than 100,000 cu. meters) was verified to exist in a depression north of Pinones. Sub-bottom seismic profiling and further vibracoring in upcoming months will further define the characteristics of these deposits. Stations: 9; Cores: 5.
