Other ID: LYNCH70485; LYNC 704-85

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Anne M. Trehu

Affiliate Investigator(s): Al Ballard - NORDA

Information Specialist(s): Anne M. Trehu

Data Type(s): Seismics: Air Gun / Water Gun, Seismics: Ocean Bottom Seismometer, Seismics: Boomer, Seismics: Bubble Gun, Seismics: Sparker, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Determine the velocity structure of the crust at the continent-ocean boundary beneath the Carolina Trough. This information is needed to model the tectonic and thermal process of rifting. Cruise also included the first major deployment of OBSes designed by Bruce Ambuter, after fixing major problems identified in earlier experiments.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Yorktown, VA

End Port/Location: New London, CT

Start Date: 1985-06-09

End Date: 1985-06-30

Equipment Used: Air gun, Ocean Bottom Seismometer, Single channel hydrophone, 3.5 kHz, USGS mini-INS system

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Explosive refraction data: 465 km; airgun refraction and single-channel streamer data: 305 km; continuous wave source data: 340 km; 3.5 kHz data: 1500 km; USGS OBS stations: 19; Scripps OBS stations: 6; CTDs: 4.
