Information Specialist(s):
Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Sonar: Sidescan
Scientific Purpose/Goals: Conduct detailed sidescan survey around 3 sites to aid in location of bottom tripod system.
Vehicle(s):
Start Port/Location: Point Allerton Coast Guard Base, Hull, MA
End Port/Location: Point Allerton, Coast Guard Base, Hull, MA
Start Date: 1987-01-20
End Date: 1987-01-22
Equipment Used: Sidescan sonar, Grab sampler
Information to be Derived:
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: About 57 km of sidescan data were collected which indicated an extremely patchy sediment surface, presumably associated with the glacial origin of the region. A second day of sidescan and grab sampling had been planned to further define the sediment texture, but was cancelled because of an impending major winter storm. ASTERIAS returned to Woods Hole immediately following the survey. REMOTES and ROV surveys and existing sediment data will be used to select the tripod sites. Additional sediment samples will be collected when instruments are deployed.
