Scientific Purpose/Goals: Three SCUBA dives were made on the East Flower Garden Banks in order to gather firsthand information geology/ecology of this reef. East Flower Garden Bank is the northern most hermatypic reef in the Gulf of Mexico. This reef is found 110 nm offshore Freeport, TX at lat. 27 deg. 54.50 min. and long. 93 deg. 36.00 min. The reef lies in 120 m of water, has a relief of 100 m, and covers an area of 67 km2.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Freeport, TX

End Port/Location: Freeport, TX

Start Date: 1987-08-15

End Date: 1987-08-16

Equipment Used: SCUBA, Submersible Observation

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Samples were collected in numerous sediment "pockets" that are found scattered over the reef crest. These samples will be analyzed for micro-molluscs and compared to other samples from shelf-edge banks in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.
