USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 1989-006-FA

Other ID: PA1-89; ANDERSON 89-1

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Michael Bothner

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Imagery: Video, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology, Sonar: Sidescan, Visual Identification: Submersible Observations

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The primary objective for this cruise is to acquire the first complete sidescan sonar coverage of an 81 square kilometer area that includes the proposed outfall site. Other objectives were to collect high-resolution seismic reflection and bathymetric data throughout the survey area and to collect sediment samples and take photographs and video of the sea floor at specific targets, identified using the sidescan results.

Start Port/Location: Coast Guard Base, Boston, MA

End Port/Location: Coast Guard Base, Boston, MA

Start Date: 1989-04-02

End Date: 1989-04-11

Equipment Used: Camera - B/W video, Corer - piston, Grab sampler - Van Veen , Klein 531 sidescan, Corer - gravity, Hydroplastic corer, Megapulse Accufix 500 LORAN-C, Q-MIPS sidescan sonar system, Submersible Observation

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Suspended sediment concentrations; Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Sidescan sonar coverage: 67 square kilometers. The sidescan-sonar records were of excellent quality over most of the study area.
