Status: Completed
Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
Funding Program(s):
Principal Investigator(s): David Twichell
Affiliate Investigator(s): Mark Rudin, UNLV
Information Specialist(s): David Twichell
Data Type(s): Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology
Scientific Purpose/Goals: Piston and gravity coring with a coring system provided by UNLV. Cores were primarily collected in Las Vegas Bay to describe sediment thickness and sediment types.
Vehicle(s):
Start Port/Location: Lake Mead Marina, NPS facility
End Port/Location: Lake Mead Marina, NPS facility
Start Date: 2000-07-11
End Date: 2000-07-18
Equipment Used: Piston corer, Gravity corer, P-code GPS
Information to be Derived:
Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Cores were attempted at 17 stations using a variety of coring techniques. Cores were collected at 14 stations. Some cores were collected by divers, and 3 different gravity corers were tested as well. Most cores were collected in less than 30 m water where seismic profiles showed sediments mostly to be 0.5-2 m thick. Most of these cores were 30-70 cm long. Core recovery was poor because the fine-grained unconsolidated sediment washed out of the corer as it was being brought back to the surface. Two cores were collected in the deep part of the lake (>130 m), and these cores successfully recovered 160 and 200 cm long cores.
