Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Mark Erik Hansen

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Nancy DeWitt

Data Type(s): Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sonar: Single Beam

Scientific Purpose/Goals: High-resolution bathymetric mapping was conducted in 2001 in Lake Okeechobee by the USGS, in cooperation with SFWMD. Of primary interest to the USGS and SFWMD is the quantification of the present day lakebed in Lake Okeechobee. This information can be used by water management decision-makers to better assess the water capacity of the lake at various levels.

Vehicle(s): Unknown

Start Port/Location: Lake Okeechobee FL

End Port/Location: Clewiston, FL

Start Date: 2001-09-11

End Date: 2001-10-24

Equipment Used: Marimatech Echosounder, Ashtech Z-Xtreme DGPS, TSS DMS-05 Motion Sensor, Choke Ring Antenna

Information to be Derived: Single beam bathymetry (x,y,z) data. Products are ASCII text files of the sounding data and point shapefiles representing seafloor elevations. Differential GPS (DGPS) data files for precise navigation.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Single-beam bathy lines (272); Raw GPS data from base stations (205 files) and boat (119 files); Raw GPS in Rinex format (116 base files, 87 boat files); Processed soundings (519,383) in comma-delimited and Esri point shapefile formats

Staff: Noreen Buster, Nancy DeWitt, Mark Erik Hansen, Gary Hill, Keith Ludwig, Billy Reynolds

Affiliate Staff:

Notes: Additional Staff: Russel Peterson
The survey area covered all of Lake Okeechobee except portions of the eastern section where water depths were insufficient for safe boat operations. All data were processed relative to the WGS84 (G1150) ellipsoid. Operation personnel were used to assist in surveying and staff rotation. Digital FACS logs were generated by N.T. DeWitt in March 2018 using the handwritten logbook to comply with data archiving requests.
