Scientific Purpose/Goals: To collect nearshore bathymetry and sub-surface geology data to assess the impacts of Hurricane Sandy.

Vehicle(s): Rental Vehicle, White Dodge Pickup - White

Start Port/Location: Fire Island, NY

End Port/Location: Fire Island, NY

Start Date: 2014-10-03

End Date: 2014-10-13

Equipment Used: Other, Ashtech Z-Xtreme DGPS, Choke Ring Antenna, GPS , Generic - Echosounder, Valeport SVP

Information to be Derived: Bathymetry data

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Collected roughly 469km of single beam bathy data over 37hrs of surveying with 2 jetski platforms. Jetski survey extensively captured bathymetry of Sandy Breach, Fire Island Inlet and Narrow Bay at Smith Point County Park. Lower resolution data was also collected in Eastern portion of Great South Bay. Topography of the Sandy Breach flood shoals and western and eastern flanks were mapped by on-foot using backpack GPS antennas. Previously established benchmark at Bellport was occupied by the BGAN for the length of the survey and base data was used to post-process all elevation data collected (bathy and topo).
