Scientific Purpose/Goals: Site visit to coral calcification monitoring stations to measure coral and algal calcification rates

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

End Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

Start Date: 2015-04-13

End Date: 2015-04-30

Equipment Used: Settling plates, HOBO Water Temperature Pro V2 Data Logger, Balance, Digital Camera, GPS

Information to be Derived: Mass of calcium carbonate gained per unit time for corals Montastraea faveolata and Acropora cervicornis and crustose coralline algal communities on nylon tiles. Hourly temperature data for past 6 months. Deploying new coral specimens of Acropora cervicornis and Porites astreoides.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Measured buoyant mass of n = 30 colonies of Orbicella faveolata and n = 10 Acropora cervicornis, and dry mass of crustose coralline algae gained on n = 30 tiles. Maintenance of stations completed. Obtained samples from O. faveolata colonies using tile saw, transplanted remaining live halves of colonies back to the reef. Downloaded underwater temperature data from Fowey, Crocker, and Sombrero Reefs covering last six months. Took underwater photographs. Measured buoyant mass and deployed n = 30 colonies of Porites astreoides at Fowey, Crocker, and Sombrero Reef. Measured buoyant mass and deployed n = 30 Acropora cervicornis colonies at Crocker Reef and Mote Looe Key coral nursery.
