USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 2018-051-FA

Other ID: none

Status: Pending

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Marine Geohazards Sources and Probability (LQ00ENR)

Principal Investigator(s): Uri Ten Brink, Nathaniel Miller

Affiliate Investigator(s): John Collins (WHOI)

Information Specialist(s): Nathaniel Miller

Data Type(s): Seismics: Ocean Bottom Seismometer

Scientific Purpose/Goals: This activity will deploy an array of 6 intermediate period ocean-bottom seismographs (OBS). The OBS will record ambient seismic noise for ~6 - 12 months. The ambient noise will be used to measure sediment shear wavespeeds. Shear wavespeed is a proxy for shear strength, a key parameter in controlling slope stability.

Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 2018-09-22

End Date: 2018-09-24

Equipment Used: Ocean Bottom Seismometer, Other

Information to be Derived: Sediment shear wavespeed
