Funding Program(s): Coral Reef Ecosystems Studies - CREST (GX.22.MN00.E3R50.00)

Principal Investigator(s): Ilsa Kuffner

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Lucy Bartlett, Ilsa Kuffner, Anastasios Stathakopoulos

Data Type(s): Biological Field Study: Experiments (biological), Environmental Data: Temperature, Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Site visit to coral calcification monitoring stations to measure coral and algal calcification rates.

Vehicle(s): Ford F-350 Dually White (GSA)

Start Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

End Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

Start Date: 2018-04-23

End Date: 2018-05-12

Equipment Used: Balance, HOBO Water Temperature Pro V2 Data Logger, Digital Camera, Settling plates, Sea-Bird Wave and Tide Logger (SBE 26plus), Other, GPS

Information to be Derived: Mass of calcium carbonate gained per unit time for corals Acropora palmata and Acropora cervicornis and crustose coralline algal communities on nylon tiles. Hourly temperature data for past 6 months.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Work under this FAN occurred during two field excursions: April 23 - 28, Crocker Reef, Fowey Reef, and Sombrero Reef; May 6 - 11 for Dry Tortugas National Park. Data gathered includes calcification rates of coral and crustose algae, underwater photographs, and underwater temperature. Samples collected crustose coralline tiles. New Acropora palmata successfully fragments were deployed at all sites.
