Scientific Purpose/Goals: Lake Enriquillo, located in the Dominican Republic, is an important location to examine ocean-continent interactions due to its remote location far from anthropogenic influences. Lake Enriquillo is a hypersaline lake, which leads to excellent sediment preservation, and is situated to record the balance of evaporation and precipitation. The purpose of this trip is to collect sediment samples from Lake Enriquillo for organic geochemical analyses. These geochemical analyses include faunal assemblages, alkane biomarkers, alkenone sea surface temperature reconstruction, and analysis of lipids (dinosterol). Additional water samples will be collected over a depth profile and analyzed for salinity, pH, total alkalinity, and oxygen isotopes. The ultimate goal is to reconstruct temperature, evaporation, and precipitation patterns over the past few centuries.
