Scientific Purpose/Goals: The objective of this study is to characterize the beach and nearshore morphology and evaluate the USGS Total Water Level and Coastal Change forecasts at sites within Cape Cod National Seashore. One site (Head of the Meadow beach) is the location of ongoing research by collaborators at the Center for Coastal Studies and Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. The purpose of deploying a CoastCam camera station is to visualize and map the beach and nearshore region to determine the types of bar morphologies, their persistence and temporal variability (i.e. changes due to tides, waves, storm events, recovery, and seasonal changes), and the relationship of these changes to wave and water-level conditions. The CoastCam observations will be made in summer and early fall and are intended overlap with acoustic tracking of tagged sharks at a nearshore array and nearshore measurements of waves, water levels, and currents. Combined, the information may provide insight into the relationship, if any, between shark behavior and nearshore morphology. At a second site in Eastham, late fall through spring observations will be used primarily to assess the forecast skill of the total water level and coastal change forecasts. In addition to providing imagery for scientific use, the CoastCam systems will serve as public web cameras. Meteorlogical measurements will be made at the CoastCam location to supplement data on nearshore circulation processes, especially during the summer-early fall deployments that overlap with the shark behavior research.
