Information to be Derived: Seismic reflection profiles

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: "A geophysical transect 140 km long, framed around two overlapping, 15 s reflection lines, extends from exposed Franciscan rocks in the Coast Ranges, across the Great Valley, and onto exposed Sierran granitic rocks. The reflection profiles were Collected using an 800-channel system that permitted both close group spacing (30 m) and long offset (12 km-0-12 km) (Zoback & Wentworth 1986). More than 500 km of associated refraction profiling were collected, using a system of 120 portable instruments, to supplement the pre-existing line in the Diablo Range. Interpretation involved two-dimensional ray tracing and some amplitude analysis. Adequate geologic maps and excellent gravity and magnetic surveys were already available for the region." From Carl M. Wentworth, Mark D. Zoback, Andrew Griscom, Robert C. Jachens, Walter D. Mooney Geophysical Journal International, Volume 89, Issue 1, April 1987, Pages 105–110
