Scientific Purpose/Goals: Continuous monitoring of surface water and pore-water depth, salinity, and temperature, soil temperature and meteorological data, and pore-water collection for chemistry analysis in estuaries across Cape Cod, MA to examine environmental geochemistry and the impact of impoundments and restoration of salt marsh environments.

Information to be Derived: Time-series sensor data including eddy co-variance flux tower measurements of methane and carbon dioxide; meteorological measurements; soil temperature; well measurements of CTD and methane; creek measurements using a YSI multi-parameter sonde and ProOceanus mini-CH4. Discrete measurements of CO2 and CH4 flux from different wetland vegetation sites will correspond with pore-water collections for chemical constituents (including DOC,DIC, Alkalinity, Chloride, Sulfate) and multi-parameter YSI measurements. Sediment core collections from new sites (Woods Hole, West Falmouth, Flat Pond) will be age-dated and analyzed for carbon content.

Specific locations include the Falmouth area (Woods Hole, West Falmouth, Flat Pond and Sage Lot Pond in Waquoit) and the Wellfleet area (Herring River - area of Phragmites and another of Typha)
