USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 2022-011-FA

Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Biogeochemistry, groundwater monitoring, and environmental assessment (LQ000I4)

Principal Investigator(s): Meagan Eagle, Kevin Kroeger

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Rebecca Sanders-Demott, Adrian Mann, Jennifer O'keefe Suttles, Meagan Eagle, Thomas Brooks

Data Type(s): Sampling: Chemistry, Environmental Data: Methane, Environmental Data: CO2, Time Series: Geochemical Monitoring, Geochemical: Experiments (geochemical), Biological Field Study: Experiments (biological), Location-Elevation: Transects, Environmental Data: CTD

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Continuous monitoring of surface water and pore-water depth, salinity, and temperature, soil temperature and meteorological data, and pore-water collection for chemistry analysis in estuaries across Cape Cod, MA to examine environmental geochemistry and the impact of impoundments and restoration of salt marsh environments.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 2022-01-13

End Date: 2022-12-31

Equipment Used: Masterflex Portable Peristaltic Pump, Groundwater wells (PVC), Creek moorings, Push Point porewater samplers, In-Situ AquaTroll 200 (CTD), Eddy Co-Variance Flux Tower, InSitu BaroTroll 500, Onset HOBO Weather Station, ProOceanus mini CH4, Onset HOBO Temperature Logger, LI-COR 7810 CH4 CO2 analyzer, Chambers for gas flux measurement, RTK

Information to be Derived: Time-series sensor data including eddy co-variance flux tower measurements of methane and carbon dioxide; meteorological measurements; soil temperature; well measurements of CTD and methane; creek measurements using a YSI multi-parameter sonde and ProOceanus mini-CH4. Discrete measurements of CO2 and CH4 flux from different wetland vegetation sites will correspond with pore-water collections for chemical constituents (including DOC,DIC, Alkalinity, Chloride, Sulfate) and multi-parameter YSI measurements.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Surface water and porewater collections are completed. Samples are stored in WHSC walk-in freezers and refrigerators or distributed to external laboratories for analysis. Gas flux and CTD measurements are completed. Raw data files and field notes are stored in WHSC network folders.
