Other ID: Alaska Gas Hydrate Production Test

Status: Pending

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): USGS GAS HYDRATES (LQ000FP)

Principal Investigator(s): William Waite, Carolyn Ruppel, John Pohlman, Stephen Phillips

Affiliate Investigator(s): Timothy Collett, USGS (Energy & Minerals, Denver, CO) Laura Stern, USGS (Earthquake Hazards, Menlo Park, CA)

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Biological Field Study: Surveys (biological), Geochemical: Surveys (geochemical), Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: To collect sediment, gas and water samples from a gas hydrate reservoir system as the system is cored, then collect gas and water as the gas hydrate reservoir itself is depressurized to release methane from the gas hydrate.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Deadhorse, AK

End Port/Location: Deadhorse, AK

Start Date: 2022-05-11

End Date: 2022-08-31

Equipment Used: USGS-GAS, Sample containers, Corer - pressure

Information to be Derived: gas hydrate saturation, sediment geotechnical properties, sediment chemistry, pore water chemistry, gas chemistry, microbiology

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Building on logging-while-drilling and sidewall pressure coring efforts at the site in 2018 (stratigraphic test well), an extended gas hydrate production test program has been developed. In 2022, a Geodata well will be drilled, with pressure coring to provide sediment, fluid and gas for analysis. A Production Test Well will be drilled immediately thereafter, and this well will be used to depressurize the gas hydrate reservoir and collect the produced methane and pore waters for an extended-duration test intended to last one year.
