Scientific Purpose/Goals: To collect benthic and mid-water column sediment plumes from a deep-sea nodule extraction test operation.

Vehicle(s): None

Start Port/Location: San Diego, CA

End Port/Location: San Diego, CA

Start Date: 2022-09-12

End Date: 2022-10-26

Equipment Used: CTD, Semipermeable Membrane Device (SPMD), water bottle, watersamples

Information to be Derived: Mineral composition and metal concentration of particulates in benthic and mid-water column sediment plumes.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: During this research cruise I collected water and particulate samples from mid-water column and benthic sediment plumes generated during a deep-sea nodule extraction pilot test operation. Samples were collected from GoFlo bottles mounted on a CTD, and Niskin bottles mounted on an ROV. Benthic and mid-water plume samples were collected during various stages of production and discharge. Particle samples and nodules were transported to USGS PCMSC for mineralogical identification, water samples were transported to collaborators at Texas A&M University.
