Scientific Purpose/Goals: Investigate production, flux and bioavailability of seep-derived dissolved organic matter

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Astoria, OR

End Port/Location: Astoria, OR

Start Date: 2023-08-11

End Date: 2023-08-20

Equipment Used: Pore water sampling, Niskin bottle, Push Point porewater samplers, Gas sampler, Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS)

Information to be Derived: Chemical composition of pore fluids, gases and water column of seep area

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: From Aug 12-Aug 19, 2023, water samples, sediment and pore fluids were collected from Hydrate Ridge and Astoria Canyon, offshore of Oregon, USA aboard the R/V Atlantis. 105 water samples were collected in Niskin bottles during nine CTD casts targeting Hydrate Ridge and areas in Astoria Canyon. 101 sediment and pore water samples were collected from six gravity cores collected in Astoria Canyon. 159 sediment and pore water samples were collected with a multi-corer at Hydrate Ridge and in Astoria Canyon. 203 sediment and pore water samples were collected from 29 push cores collected by the Alvin submersible. The samples were split for multiple analysis by the USGS and partnering institutions. USGS has analyzed, but not released, data for dissolved organic carbon from the pore fluids and the gases methane and CO2 from the water column samples. The data currently reside on John Pohlman’s hard drive and are backed up on the USGS OneDrive.
