Other ID: TC Lee Response- time-series data

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Next-Generation Total Water Level and Coastal Change Forecast (WH) (MN00U03)

Principal Investigator(s): Christopher Sherwood

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Olivia De Meo

Data Type(s): Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography)

Scientific Purpose/Goals: To collect time-series water level and wave data during anticipated impacts of tropical cyclone Lee on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Priority sites will be where past or ongoing research on total water level and coastal change have been conducted by the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) and its collaborators.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Falmouth, MA

End Port/Location: Falmouth, MA

Start Date: 2023-09-12

End Date: 2023-09-22

Equipment Used: Pressure

Information to be Derived: High frequency (fast sample rate) pressure data to determine water level elevations and to calculate wave statistics. Wave runup on coastal beaches and high-water levels during storm impacts.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Ahead of potential impacts of TC Lee, deploy autonomous pressure loggers on 3 ocean facing beach sites on the Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), and another in a tidal creek in the back-barrier marsh of Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, MA. In addition, if the New England Water Science Center will not be activating their storm response, we plan to deploy pressure loggers at West Falmouth Harbor in Falmouth, MA and in Lewis Bay in Hyannis, MA. Two of the CACO beach sites are on-going CoastCam sites (Head of Meadow Beach in Truro and Marconi Beach in Wellfleet) where monitoring of total water level and coastal change has been underway since 2020. Recovery all deployed sensors after storm has passed and conditions allow. Supporting elevation, location, and beach survey data will be collected as part of a separate field activity.
