Other ID: 23CCT02

Status: Pending

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Estuary and Marsh Geology - EMRG (Geomorphology) (GX.25.MN00.M1D20.00)

Principal Investigator(s): Kathryn Smith

Affiliate Investigator(s): Jonathan Pitchford (Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve), Navid H Jafari (Louisiana State University)

Information Specialist(s): Joseph Terrano

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The USGS in cooperation with LSU and the GBNERR will collect sediment cores and penetrometer measurements from marshes in Middle Bay and Point Aux Chenes.

Vehicle(s): Ford Expedition Green

Start Port/Location: Saint Petersburg, FL

End Port/Location: Moss Point, MS

Start Date: 2023-10-23

End Date: 2023-10-27

Equipment Used: Push Corer

Information to be Derived: Marsh shear stress, grain size

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: At Site 8, three sediment cores (peat augers 0.5-2 meters in length and/or push cores < 1 meter in length) will be collected on the marsh platform at roughly 10, 20, and 50 meters from the shoreline. Push cores will be retained for sediment analysis. Marsh shear strength measurements will be collected using a penetrometer at seven sites (Sites 1,3,5-9). The penetrometer will be pushed into the marsh surface and measurements will be taken. No samples will be retained from the penetrometer.
