Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology, Time Series: Geochemical Monitoring, Geochemical: Surveys (geochemical), Sampling: Chemistry

Scientific Purpose/Goals: To quantify the interactions between hydrothermal and magmatic systems in dormant and active phases in order to forecast the role fluids play in explosive caldera eruptions. The main objectives are to determine the controls on permeability pathways and fluid flow within calderas, identify the role the hydrothermal system plays in magmatic outgassing, and to assess hydrothermal system response to periods of intrusion.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Crete, Greece

End Port/Location: Crete, Greece

Start Date: 2025-03-03

End Date: 2025-03-28

Equipment Used: niskin bottle, McLane Large Volume Water Transfer Systems , Radium Delayed Coincidence Counting, ROV manipulator arm

Information to be Derived: Short-lived radium isotope (Ra-223 & Ra-224) concentrations in hydrothermal plume water and hydrothermal oxide minerology and geochemistry data.
