Status: Pending

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center, Dry Tortugas National Park

Funding Program(s): GRRASP - Ocean Conditions (GX.26.MN00.UXB04.00)

Principal Investigator(s): Anastasios Stathakopoulos, Ilsa Kuffner

Affiliate Investigator(s): Andrew Morin, National Park Service

Information Specialist(s): Anastasios Stathakopoulos, Ilsa Kuffner

Data Type(s): Biological Field Study: Experiments (biological), Environmental Data: Temperature, Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Biology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Initiation of new experiment for pilot testing of selectively bred elkhorn corals' in reestablishing the species in DRTO. Corals will be deployed and their survival and growth performance will be quantified for two years. This site visit will be to deploy the initial samples to derive coral and algal calcification rates as well as collect underwater temperature data.

Vehicle(s): Ford F-350 Dually Silver

Start Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

End Port/Location: St. Petersburg, FL

Start Date: 2026-04-01

End Date: 2026-04-18

Equipment Used: Ohaus Balance, Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA) Tiles, Other, HOBO Water Temperature Pro V2 Data Logger, Digital Camera, Global Positioning System (GPS)

Information to be Derived: Mass of calcium carbonate gained per unit time for coral Acropora palmata and crustose coralline algal communities on PVC tiles. Hourly temperature data for past12 months. Underwater temperature and photographic documentation of status of corals and sites.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: 36 new corals will be placed at three previously established calcification assessment sites (PLS, PLW, GDK). Initial mass, condition, and photographic imagery will be taken.
