Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Western Fisheries Research Center, Nisqually Reach Nature Center, USGS, Water Resources Division, Washington, Nisqually Tribe, USGS, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s): Coastal Habitats in Puget Sound (ZP00AZZ)

Principal Investigator(s): Eric Grossman

Affiliate Investigator(s): Steve Rubin

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Characterize substrate and benthic invertebrate condition of the nearshore/tidal flats of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge following the largest dike removal in the Pacific Northwest that occurred September 2009 to recover salmon habitat and function This and subsequent repeat surveys through 2012 will quantify the response of nearshore/tidal flat geomorphology, benthic and planktonic community composition and succession, food web connectivity, and water quality conditions following dike removal providing essential empirical data for developing models of nearshore ecosystem response to large-scale land use. Last year baseline information was collected under FACS ID A-6-09-PS.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Nisqually, WA

End Port/Location: Nisqually, WA

Start Date: 2010-08-09

End Date: 2010-08-13

Equipment Used: samples

Information to be Derived: Substrate type, benthic invertebrate and phytoplankton community composition, water quality, suspended sediment and detrital organic matter flux to tidal flats, eelgrass cover, and eelgrass plant metrics (shoot density, internode lengths, leaf length/width, epiphytes)
