Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: 1. Collect bottom-sediment samples at an array of stations near the wreck, and at comparable control stations along the same isobath, to provide a means of examining the extent of initial contamination in reference to trace metals (especially copper) and petroleum hydrocarbons, and the potential biological impact on macroinfaunal communities. 2. Obtain hydrocasts at a limited number of stations (from a subset of the sediment stations) to collect water samples for the analysis of trace metals (especially copper).

Start Date: 1987-11-19

End Date: 1987-11-21

Equipment Used: boxcore, grab, RhoRho

Information to be Derived: Grain size, trace metals

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Bottom sediments were collected with a box corer at an array of eight stations within a 500-m radius of the vessel and at a control station located 8.25 km to the NW. Subcores from these samples were collected for analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons and trace metals, benthic macroinfauna, sediment grain size and total organic carbon. Larger animals were collected from remaining unused sediment subcores and contained for subsequent analysis of trace metals in tissues. Hydrocasts were obtained at the control site and one ofthe nearfield sites, approximately 500 m to the east of the vessel. Samples were collected at various water depths at each of these two hydrocast stations.
