AKA: E-1-01-CR

Other ID: E-1-01-WO, 2001-055-FA

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center, USGS, Biological Resources Division, Columbia River Research Lab

Funding Program(s): Coastal Change Hazards (MU051), Southwest Washington Coastal Erosion Study (MU274)

Principal Investigator(s): Walter Barnhardt

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Imagery: Photo, Imagery: Video, Sampling: Geology, Sonar: Sidescan

Scientific Purpose/Goals: To determine sediment distribution and thickness behind Bonneville Dam. Sediment budget for Columbia River. Geologic control on benthic habitat (salmon, white sturgeon).

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Hood River, OR

End Port/Location: Hood River, OR

Start Date: 2001-08-03

End Date: 2001-08-22

Equipment Used: sidescansonar, VanVeengrab, underwatercamera, underwatertelevision, SIS1000

Information to be Derived: Surficial sediment distribution, sediment thickness, depth to bedrock, sediment volume, grain size

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Completed sidescan mosaic of reservoir. Approximately 30 km of subbottom data were collected before Davit failed and fish was lost (but recovered 3 days later!). Samples were collected at 21 sites, most with good video and still photograpy.

Staff: Michael Boyle, Laura Kerr

Affiliate Staff:
Darren Gallion (USGS BRD Columbia River Research Lab) - Boat Captain and Fisheries Biologist
Chuck Worley (USGS Woods Hole) - Electronics Technician

Notes: Columbia River Gorge is windy, with winds greater than 40 knots, gusts up to 50. Swells ran 8-10 feet, with a period of about 2 s. Tough place to work in a 30 foot boat. August is not the ideal month. Expect better conditions in spring/early summer.
