Scientific Purpose/Goals: The primary purpose of the cruise was to obtain high resolution side-scan sonar imagery, bathymetry, and box cores to supplement previously collected data with the aim of producing an interpretive map of bottom types for the South Bay.

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: The Klein and Mudseis systems were utilized to obtain digital imagery in three primary areas that had been previously mapped: 1) the main tidal channel with its sedimentary furrows; 2) the shallow area east of San Bruno Shoal with its variety of bottome types; and 3) the deep area east of Hunters Point running north to the Bay Bridge which has light and darktonal patches. Results from this cruise showed that the bottom morphologies had changed very little since previously mapped. In particular, the furrows observed nearly 10 years ago in the main tidal channel are still present and are still aligned with their axes parallel to the channel axis. The dark tonal patches near Hunters Point appear to be due to the presence of scattered and discontinuous coarse debris disseminated in a matrix of mud and sand sediment.
