Scientific Purpose/Goals: 1. To investigate the dynamic relationships between the suspended and bottom sediment and the near-bottom flow field over a period of about one week at a specific site on the inner continental shelf off southern California. 2. Tests and evaluation of the operational performance, handling and utility of the Geoprobe station in the offshore zone. 3. Comparison of the performance characteristics of the current meters and pressure sensor with that of other electromagnetic current meters and pressure sensors. 4. Analysis of the time-dependent vertical distribution, chemical composition, and hydraulic properties of suspended materials in the water column at the experimental site. 5. Correlation of the movement of bottom and suspended sediment with the dominant hydrodynamic mechanisms driving the near-bottom flow field. In particular, an evaluation will be made of the effectiveness of shoaling internal waves in producing sediment transport. 6. Measurements of current velocity and water temperature at several locations near the sea floor to provide information on bottom boundary layer processes and their role in producing sediment movement. 7. Correlation of the size and migration rate of the small scale bedforms with the near-bottom flow field. 8. Grain size and mineralogic analyses of the sediments from selected sites between the beach and the outer instrument packages.
