Scientific Purpose/Goals: Investigate hydrothermal flow, mineral deposits, microbiology, and petroleum deposits in active vent fields of Southern Trough.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: La Paz, Mexico

End Port/Location: La Paz, Mexico

Start Date: 2003-03-01

End Date: 2003-03-08

Equipment Used: submersible, pushcore, watersamples, thermocouple, photometer, osmometer, Niskenbottle, temperature

Information to be Derived: Composition of vent fluids, pore waters, hydrothermal deposits; microbiology of hydrothermal chimneys; rate and conditions for chimney growth; pore water composition; petroleum distribution in sediment.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Collected about 25 hydrothermal precipitate samples by ROV grab and 15 sediment samples with push cores. Petroleum recovered from hydrothermal samples and sediment cores. Organic chemistry of gases and petroleum, inorganic chemistry of petroleum and rock samples analyzed in USGS
