Scientific Purpose/Goals: The overall program long-term goal of STRATAFORM is to advance our understanding of the development of stratigraphic units and sequences on continental shelves and upper continental slopes. In this specific project we will obtain high quality measurements of sediment transport in the benthic boundary layer during energetic storms and during periods of high sediment input from coastal rivers (floods) for use in developing and testing models which predict the emplacement and modifications to discrete depositional units.

Information to be Derived: Correlations of sediment resuspension from the bed with energetic waves and currents; estimates of bottom stresses due to combined flows of waves and currents; time-series temperature and salinity data near the seabed.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Time series (hourly) measurements of currents, waves, temperature, salinity, and suspended sediment in the bottom boundary layer (from 20 cm to 120 cm above the seabed). Recovered GEOPROBE from W-4-96-NC.
