This GIS overlay is a component of the U.S Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center's, Gulf of Mexico GIS database. The Gulf of Mexico GIS database is intended to organize and display USGS held data and provide on-line (WWW) access to the data and/or metadata related to hydrate studies in this region.
This ArcView shapefile shows the regional bathymetry within the US Exclusive Economic Zone of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. The bathymetry is presented as lines representing the 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 m contours. These data were compiled by Collett (1995) to assess gas hydrate resources for the 1995 National assessment of United States oil and gas resources. The tabular data used to generate this shapefile were copied from Charpentier et al (1996).

East Coast and Gulf of Mexico bathymetry contours - This CD-ROM contains files in support of the 1995 USGS National assessment of United States oil and gas resources (DDS-30), which was published separately and summarizes the results of a 3-year study of the oil and gas resources of the onshore and state waters of the United States. The study describes about 560 oil and gas plays in the United States; confirmed and hypothetical, conventional and unconventional. A parallel study of the Federal offshore is being conducted by the U.S. Minerals Management Service. This CD-ROM contains files in multiple formats, so that almost any computer user can import them into word processors and spreadsheets. The tabular data include some tables not released in DDS-30. No proprietary data are released on this CD-ROM, but some tables of summary statistics from the proprietary files are provided. The complete text of DDS-30 is also available, as well as many figures. Also included are some of the programs used in the assessment, in source code and with supporting documentation. A companion CD-ROM (DDS-35) includes the map data and the same text data, but none of the tabular data or assessment programs.
File copied from DDS 36 where it was stored as a LIN file in the Arc ungenerate format.

The atmx_bat.lin file was read into ArcView 3.2 using an avenue script called loalin.ave which converted the ungenerate format to a shapefile. This file was then made into a polyline shapefile, and were still in their original Albers Equal Area projection.

unknown
ArcToolbox was used to define the projection of the shapefile as Albers Equal Area, NAD83 using the projection defined by ESRI as: USA_Contiguous_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic_USGS.
unknown
The shapefile was reprojected to Geographic, NAD83 using ArcToolbox, version 8.2

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Added a landing page link as the first link in the identification section. Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. The link to the larger work citation had to be fixed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
