1) Map sea floor geology in shallow water (0-10 m depths) at very high-resolution by using swath bathymetry, acoustic backscatter, and sub-bottom profiling.
2) Test and calibrate sea floor mapping equipment (resolution and repeatability of swath bathymetric mapping and real-time kinematic navigation).
Location
Red Brook Harbor, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic;
Summary
We mapped the sea floor in Red Brook Harbor in depths from ~2 meters to 10 meters using our SEA SwathPlus 234 kHz interferometric sonar, EdgeTech 424 chirp seismic profiler, Knudsen 3.5 kHz 3200 seismic profiler, and kinematic navigation techniques. Fully overlapping swath bathymetric data was collected, as well as concurrent seismic reflection profiles. After the geophysical data were collected, we deployed our SEABOSS system and occupied 50 stations, collecting 47 sediment samples, still photos, and video. We also tested out the Benthos C3D system for a day, occupying 5 lines that were previously surveyed with our SwathPlus system for comparison.
Comments
Will use several sub-bottom systems: Knudsen, EdgeTech 424 CHIRP. Will NOT tow a sidescan; use backscatter from SubX.
