Field Activity 2024-010-FA

Identifier 2024-010-FA
Alternate names Skilak Lake site response deployment
Purpose Measure site response of Skilak Lake basin for calibration of lacustrine paleoseismic record.
Location Lake Skilak, Alaska
Summary Deployed 2 OBS in bottom of Lake Skilak and 8 seismometers around the lake. Instruments remained deployed for ~1 year.

2024-05-03 2024-05-14 Deployed 8 land seismic stations (Quanterra Q330 + Trillium T120PH sensors) and 2 ocean bottom seismometers (WHOI BBOBS) around and in Lake Skilak, Alaska. Used Alaska Science Center's R/V Lutris (25' Boston Whaler) and purpose-built float frame for OBS. Personnel: Nathaniel Miller, Peter Haeussler, Rob Witter, Brian Andrews, Tim Kane (WHOI), and Hannah Brewer (WHOI).
2024-08-25 2024-08-28 Replaced data loggers (Quanterra Balers) and checked power systems on 8 land seismic stations. Used Alaska Science Center's R/V Moose Dancer. Personnel: Nathaniel Miller and Rob Witter.
2025-02-12 2025-02-13 Checked power systems on land stations SK07 and SK06. SK07 was found to have dead batteries. SK06 was functioning normally. Personnel: Nathaniel Miller.
2025-06-01 2025-06-10 Recovered 8 land seismic stations (SK03-10) and 1 OBS (SK01). The second OBS (SK02) did not surface; we suspect it is stuck in mud. SK10 shutdown due to low battery in March 2025. SK07 shutdown due to low battery in December 2024. All other stations were running upon recovery. Data were successfully downloaded from all recovered instruments. Used Alaska Science Center's R/V Lutris and R/V Moose Dancer (both 25' Boston Whalers) and a purpose-built float frame for OBS recovery. Personnel: Nathaniel Miller, Rob Witter, Eric Moore, Drake Singleton, Daniel Brothers, Tim Kane (WHOI), and Hannah Brewer (WHOI).
2025-09-01 2025-09-07 Search and recovery attempt for OBS SK02 using shallow water ROV. ROV support from Oregon State University (OSU). USGS Personnel: Nathan Miller (WHSC), Rob Witter (ASC), Eric Marsjanik (WHSC), Alex Wick (OSU), and Raelynn Heinitz (OSU). GX25GY00ET2SZ00
