Field Activity E101WO

Identifier E101WO
Alternate names E-1-01-WO, 2001-055-FA
Also known as E-1-01-CR
Purpose To determine sediment distribution and thickness behind Bonneville Dam. Sediment budget for Columbia River. Geologic control on benthic habitat (salmon, white sturgeon).
Description United States Geological Survey, Woods Hole, Massachusetts,United States Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California,United States Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, Columbia River Research Lab. Chief Scientist: Walter Barnhardt. Geological and Geophysical data (SIS1000, sidescansonar, VanVeengrab, underwatercamera, underwatertelevision) of field activity E-1-01-WO in Bonneville Reservoir, Columbia River from 08/03/2001 to 08/22/2001
Location Columbia River
Summary Completed sidescan mosaic of reservoir. Approximately 30 km of subbottom data were collected before Davit failed and fish was lost (but recovered 3 days later!). Samples were collected at 21 sites, most with good video and still photograpy.
Info derived Surficial sediment distribution, sediment thickness, depth to bedrock, sediment volume, grain size
Comments Columbia River Gorge is windy, with winds greater than 40 knots, gusts up to 50. Swells ran 8-10 feet, with a period of about 2 s. Tough place to work in a 30 foot boat. August is not the ideal month. Expect better conditions in spring/early summer.
