Field Activity 1976-032-FA

Identifier 1976-032-FA
Alternate names ANN-8-76
Purpose The vibracore sampling program is intended to determine the nature of the bottom sediments and shallow substrate of the inner shelf. The core data will be correlated with sub-bottom seismic profiling data to determine the distribution, lithology and economic importance of offshore geologic features and mineral resources. In addition, these studies will document important landmark data, help to evaluate the feasibility and environmental conditions of offshore mining of mineral deposits and offshore disposal of solid waste material, and provide information on the geology and geologic history of the region.
Location eastern Rhode Island Sound, Rhode Island, western Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic;
Summary Cores: 16; Total core feet: 294 ft (90 m).
Info derived Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Morphology;
Comments Core rig specifications -- Penetration capability: 12 m (40 ft.); Diameter of core: 9 cm (3.5 in.); Minimum water depth for operation: 11 m (35 ft.); Maximum water depth for operation: 67 m (225 ft.).
