Field Activity 1985-019-FA

Identifier 1985-019-FA
Alternate names LYNCH70485; LYNC 704-85
Purpose Determine the velocity structure of the crust at the continent-ocean boundary beneath the Carolina Trough. This information is needed to model the tectonic and thermal process of rifting. Cruise also included the first major deployment of OBSes designed by Bruce Ambuter, after fixing major problems identified in earlier experiments.
Location Carolina Trough, United States, North America, North Atlantic;
Summary Explosive refraction data: 465 km; airgun refraction and single-channel streamer data: 305 km; continuous wave source data: 340 km; 3.5 kHz data: 1500 km; USGS OBS stations: 19; Scripps OBS stations: 6; CTDs: 4.
Comments Cruise included two legs: LEG 1 - 06/09-19/1985, Yorktown, VA returning to Yorktown, VA; LEG 2 - 06/19-30/1985, from Yorktown, VA returning to New London, CT. Original Center People field contained: Anne Trehu, Chief Scientist; Barry Irwin (Leg 1 only); Jim Dodd (Leg 2 only); Corina Savela; Greg Miller. Project = Continental margin deep crustal structure and seismicity, Continental margin deep crustal structure and seismicity
