Summary
This was the 4th repeat swath bathymetry survey of SW section of Middle Ground. We collected single beam depth sounding in a zig-zag pattern along Middle Ground extending to the NE of the swath study area to get the general geography of the bank outside the high-resolution study area. All times UTC. 0835 UTC: Met Bill Danforth, Chuck Worley, Barry Irwin at Harbor. Bill and Chuck working in Ethernet interface to swath mapping system as opposed to serial port. Talked to engineer Matt in UK using Skype through The Unwired Village wireless connection using laptop on fantail. Picked up in harbor (Island Queen point?). Cool! ~1400 Left Bill Danforth behind and headed out toward Middle Ground. Overcast skies. 1-2 ft seas, light wind 5-10 knots from east. 1441 On station at beginning of zig-zag survey, but GPS not receiving internally. Needed to reset on receiver. ~1600 Swath bathymetry system not removing pitch and roll, nothing seems to help, so start doing zig-zag survey with single beam echo sounder, hoping that swath system will work by the time we reach the high-resolution survey area. 1700 Switched back to the old ISA Tems, and that solved the pitch and roll problem. The USB Tems apparently has a timing problem. Chuck asks: Could it be related to desktop computer not being USB2.0? Line 27. Start mowing the lawn from SE corner on HYPACK line 27. Started with swath of 30 m on a side, but then changed to 50 m on a side 100 m into the line or so, hoping to be able to skip a few lines. Did not skip line 26, however, since we want to avoid a hole at the beginning of line 27 when the width was only 30 on a side. Skipped line 25. Line 24. Went back to 30 m on a side and doing every line, because the lines go from shallow (6 m to 20 m). Should really adjust the survey lines to try to follow contours of the bank. 1809 Beginning line 18. heading 238. 1904 begin line 11. 1939 big rollers (during 30 seconds along line 7). 2019 Water is noticeably smoother rougher the south side of Middle Ground. Barry suggests running along.
