Field Activity 2009-047-FA

Identifier 2009-047-FA
Purpose Collect American eels and young-of-the-year river herring for the bio-geochemical study of mercury in Oyster Pond.
Location Oyster Pond, Falmouth, Massachusetts, United States, North America, North Atlantic;
Summary Eel traps were set at three locations in Oyster Pond on June 19. Bait consisted of frozen striped bass, held in a 4 oz. plastic jar suspended next to the neck of the trap, close to the small end. On June 23, the traps were recovered. The trap at the wooden dock at the end of Ransom Road contained a small and medium size American eel. The trap at the north side of Spohr Garden had one large eel. The traps were reset with exising bait. No eels were collected on June 26, and the traps were removed. On June 23, a dip net was used at the weir, just north of Surf Drive, to collect 26 young-of-the-year river herring that were migrating seaward.
