Field Activity 2016-645-FA

Identifier 2016-645-FA
Purpose Instal theristor arrays, time lapse cameras, collect bluff samples, GPR and ERT transects
Location Coastal bluffs of Barter Island N-slope Alaska
Summary sample locations submitted to FAD 11/15/2016
Info derived Temperatureof permafrost, timelapse imagery coastal change, subsurface geology
Comments The permafrost samples we collected during our May sampling were collected using a gas powered hammer drill with 1.5" auger and 1.25" core drill attachments. We sampled at 0.5m increments to a depth of 3-8 meters depending on the site. Entries for this field activity are based on entries from Field Activity AK 2015-624-FA Field work in 2 phases, late May 2016, Late Sept 2016 Images from 2016 and 2017 archived under this FAN.

Ground temperature data of Barter Island bluffs collected in 2016 Sensors - temperature Thermistor strings with sensors spaced at 25-centimeter intervals were installed in three boreholes extending from the ground surface to depths of up to 4.25 meters at Barter Island, Alaska. The sites were located near the bluff edge overlooking the open Beaufort Sea coast. Temperature measurements were programmed to be collected hourly from late spring through early fall in 2016 (May 31 to September 15). Because the solar- and battery-powered instrument occasionally experienced limited power availability, the dataset contains some gaps. Ferdinand K Oberle

Grain size analysis and total carbon content of augered sediment samples from Barter Island, Alaska drillcore This data release contains grain size and total carbon analysis of sediment samples from 1 inch hand-augered cores collected from Barter Island, Alaska. These data were collected in 2016 and 2019 (USGS Field Activity 2016-645-FA and 2019-634-FA). Data include location information (latitude, longitude, depth), and the weight percent of 65 phi bins, four size fractions (gravel, sand, silt, clay), total carbon, inorganic carbon, organic carbon, and calcium carbonate. Surveyed ground control and elevation checkpoints acquired at Barter Island, Alaska, 2014-2016 GPS Ground control points and checkpoints were collected during Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys conducted between September 6, 2014 and September 18, 2016 along the northern coast of Barter Island, Alaska. Data were acquired and post-processed using precise positioning and used to co-register and assess accuracy of photogrammetric data sets. Ann E Gibbs
