Field Activity 2016-654-FA

Identifier 2016-654-FA
Purpose To map faults related to Yakutat Terrane subduction using multi-channel seismic reflection, and to obtain high-resolution bathymetry data in Taan Fjord, which recently saw a large landslide and tsunami.
Location Icy Bay, Alaska
Summary data submitted to FAD on 8/30/2016; ctds, MCS, multibeam, Pos_config, readme, Taan2016_log
Info derived Multichannel seismic, multibeam bathymetry
Comments Field study funded by the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program and in part by NSF. Fieldwork was led by Sean Gulick at the University of Texas at Austin Institute for Geophysics (UTIG), Maureen Walton (USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center), and Peter Haeussler (Alaska Science Center). Bobby Reece (Texas A&M University) participated in the cruise as a co-investigator. All equipment except for the R/V Alaskan Gyre was borrowed from other institutions. Equipment used includes a Dura-Spark 240 sparker source (Texas A&M); a 24 channel, 75 m high-resolution receiver streamer (UTIG); a 24 channel, 150-m MicroEel receiver streamer (Texas A&M); a Reson SeaBat T50-P multibeam sonar (UTIG), which also collected sidescan sonar data; a CastAway CTD velocity profiler (UTIG); and several navigation systems including two GPS units (UTIG, Texas A&M) and an Applanix POS MV system (UTIG). Navigation data should be available in MCS headers and in multibeam files.
