Field Activity 2019-620-FA

Identifier 2019-620-FA
Alternate names 2019-003-FA (WHCMSC), 2019-314-FA (Kellog St. Pete), RB-19-03 (NOAA)
Purpose Sample collection to determine coral microbiomes and benthic habitat metagenomes
Location Atlantic Ocean off SE US
Summary 1. Exploration of new sites and new areas within known sites 2. Sampling of corals and associated fauna for biodiversity and biogeography 3. Community sampling at seep and coral habitats 4. Sediment sampling at soft sediment sites for biogeochemistry and diversity 5. Collections of corals for live coral experiments 6. Water sampling for water chemistry and microbial diversity 7. Sediment, water, and faunal samples for eDNA work 8. Geological observations and sampling for geomorphology 9. Lander deployments
Info derived DNA sequences, geologic substrate, coral age dating, sediment provenance
Comments This survey is being conducted in collaboration with scientists from the USGS (Woods Hole and St. Petersburg offices) and NOAA. Additional details for the WHCSMC survey can be found at: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2019-003-FA. Entries for this field activity are based on entries from Field Activity 2019-314-FA

Platform
Ronald H. Brown
Length: 274 feet; Beam: 53 feet
ROV Jason
Two-body ROV system. A 10-kilometer (6-mile) reinforced fiber-optic cable delivers electrical power and commands from the ship through Medea and down to Jason, which then returns data and live video imagery. Medea serves as a shock absorber, buffering Jason from the movements of the ship, while providing lighting and a bird’s eye view of the ROV during seafloor operations. Jason is equipped with sonars, video and still imaging systems, lighting, and numerous sampling systems.

Water-column environmental variables and accompanying discrete CTD measurements collected offshore the U.S. Mid- and South Atlantic (ver. 2.0, July 2022) CTD_SeaBird Various water column variables, including salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon, and radio-carbon isotopes were measured in samples collected using a Niskin-bottle rosette at selected depths from deepwater sites offshore the US Mid- and South Atlantic from September 2017 to April 2019. CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) data were also collected at each depth that a Niskin-bottle sample was collected and are presented along with the water sample data during the following five cruises: PC1704 (USGS field activity 2017-004-FA) in September 2017, ENG615 (USGS field activity 2018-024-FA) in June 2018, AT41 (USGS field activity 2018-042-FA) in August 2018, BMCC-2018 (USGS field activity 2018-053-FA) in October 2018, and RB1903 (USGS field activity 2019-620-FA) in April 2019. This data release supersedes version 1.0, published in March 2021 at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9V7ODDR. Versioning details are documented in the accompanying VersionHistory_P9K2GOAL.txt file.
