Field Activity 2021-013-FA

Identifier 2021-013-FA
Purpose To characterize the beach and nearshore morphology and evaluate the USGS Total Water Level and Coastal Change Forecast. Use of CoastCam camera station(s) to visualize and map the beach and nearshore region to determine the types of bar morphologies, their persistence and temporal variability, and the relationship of these changes to wave and water-level conditions. Meteorlogical measurements will be made at the CoastCam location to supplement data on nearshore circulation processes, especially during the summer-early fall deployments that overlap with the shark behavior research.
Location Head of Meadow Beach, Cape Cod National Seashore, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, Atlantic Ocean
Summary Cameras collected imagery intermittently for all of 2021. All images have been uploaded to AWS. Lens cleaning and maintenance occurred on a regular basis from storms/weather. Individual events are catalogued within this activity.
Info derived Periodic trips to maintain CoastCam and meteorologic station at Head of Meadow Beach, Truro, MA on Cape Cod National Seashore as part of this ongoing project.
Comments Mooring#s 1124 and 1125 are associated with this field activity. Supporting data was collected under a separate field activity (2021-014-FA) for CoastCam topobathy collected under this FA.

2021-01-13 2021-01-13 Eric Marsjanik visited CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA to trouble shoot problem. Notes. Voltage is good, rebooted system, 5v power supply was 5.21 so acceptable. ./ipcstat from mpbaxterm is not showing process for cam 2. Ran Shutdown.pl and restarted with startup.pl and still no camera two. This appears to be a hardware issue and will return tomorrow. Edited Crontab to shutdown at 530pm to save battery power during low light in the winter.
2021-01-14 2021-01-14 Eric Marsjanik returned to CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA and fixed issue with the camera and cleaned lenses. Camera back up and camera c2 is working now
2021-02-01 2021-02-01 Eric Marsjanik visited CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA to trouble shoot problem. Notes: Camera went down over the weekend. Replaced one battery with a charged spare at MOF. All Appears to be functional. Solar panels are outputting 24v, the charge controller is outputting 12v. Inspected cables and found rodent damage. Damage does not go through the inner insulation, only the outer.
2021-02-05 2021-02-05 Eric Marsjanik visited CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA to clean camera lenses. Notes: Tightened all terminals and inspected system. Replaced desiccant in electronics enclosure. Had network issues between cradlepoint modem and the rest of the system. Replaced the Netgear Switch inside and all is well.
2021-02-10 2021-02-10 Eric Marsjanik visited CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA to replace battery and solar controller. New controller is a Renogy Voyager which is an upgrade from the previous controller.
2021-02-18 2021-02-18 Eric Marsjanik and Alex Olson to CoastCam at HoM, Truro for maintenance. Replaced battery with charged spare, replaced solar panel with spare. Reconfigured battery box so the lower solar panel is independent from the top solar panel. Each panel has its own solar controller and cables going to the battery box. Inside the battery box the batteries are wired in parallel supplying the electronics enclosure with a constant 12v. You can watch from the x-410 web relay the supply voltage now.
2021-02-22 2021-02-22 Eric Marsjanik visited CoastCam at HoM in Truro, MA to trouble shoot problem. Notes: Voltage has been good all day. Voltage is currently 11.75 V and considering the snow I think this is acceptable. I reconfigured the crontab file to have the camera shut off at 2220 UTC just after the final S3 update. Low Voltage shutdown is now configured to shut off at 10V.
2021-03-10 2021-03-10 Null Event - moving to Marconi 2021-19-FA
2021-03-17 2021-03-17 E. Marsjanik and B. Bales traveled to Head of the Meadow Beach to clean lens - very dirty. Voltage good
2021-03-19 2021-03-19 J. Over went to Head of the Meadow to clean cameras after storm previous night. Very windy.
2021-03-31 2021-03-31 O. De Meo and Steve Suttles re-establish met station at HoM. Start collection enhanced wind parameter with gusts, lulls, and mean speed and direction using 120 sec moving average @ 1 min interval. E. Marsjanik and R. Bales - open electronics box and full inspection of CoastCam caco-01. Let box dry out. Replace hard drive and tighten guy wires for solar panel. System is operational.
2021-05-05 2021-05-05 E. Marsjanik cleaned lens. Camera 100% operational.
2021-05-31 2021-05-31 E. Marsjanik found water inside c1. Removed lens, dried out camera and stuffed solid with desiccant.   Camera system is operational.
2021-06-29 2021-06-29 Eric and Olivia went to replace met station and mayfly with new upgraded system including solar panel. We are keeping the same mooring number.
2021-09-22 2021-09-22 Bales and De Meo visiting HoM to clean the camera lens, download data from the Met station, and reprogram the met station to collect relative humidity instead of barometric pressure.
2021-12-15 2021-12-15 Suttles and De Meo visited HoM to inspect the met station for damage from the Nor'easter. Station was in good condition. Several guy wires were broken and the solar panel was facing down. The solar panel was repositioned, and the met station deviation from magnetic north was measured because it was offset. A 20 degree correction to the data will be necessary. The met station was powered off, data was downloaded, the met station was repositioned to point to magnetic north with the sight compass, and then the met station was powered back on and the data stream was confirmed. The Coastcam had water inside the electrical box, the lenses had some moisture in them, and the switch was replaced.

Equipment used

Equipment Usage description Data types Datasets
Argus camera system Argus camera system CACO01 consists of two cameras, c1 and c2, which are mounted on the bluffs of Head of the Meadow Beach. During daylight hours when operating correctly they each collect a set of 5 images every half hour. These images are sent to a hard drive and also transmitted using a modem to WHCMSC and it is uploaded to AWS. Other Imagery, Video (no data reported)
