Field Activity 2023-635-FA

Identifier 2023-635-FA
Alternate names IODP Exp. 389
Purpose The IODP scientific team will core in up to eleven locations, to a depth of 150 m below the seafloor, with the aim to address questions on main themes: • To reconstruct sea-level change in the central Pacific over the last 500,000 years; • To reconstruct the variability in climate over the last 500,000 years, as recorded in the fossil corals, and better understand the differences in response between a seasonal - inter-annual variation in climate against what represents a more permanent shift in sea surface temperature, rainfall and storm tracks; • To understand how coral reef systems respond both geologically and biologically to rapid changes in sea-level and climate - for example can reefs turn on and off when they reach certain limits, and how do they recover from disturbances in the system;
Location Big Island, Hawaii
Summary collect cores from drowned carbonate reefs surrounding the Big Island
Info derived Coral growth and species composition during sea-level change over the last 500,000 years. A full suite of geochemical proxies will be performed on the coral skeleton material after collection. If possible, pore fluids will also be collected for microbial analysis.
Comments IODP will be condcuting coral core drilling on the MMA Valour using the Benthic Geoteh Portable Remotely Operated Drill (PROD).
